Wow, photos can be quite overwhelming. Since I already use Pinterest and Picasa I decided to spend some time becoming more familiar with these tools rather than attempt to learn a completely new tool.
In our home we keep all of our photos on a shared drive and access them from our local PCs. I use Picasa 3 to organize these photos. Playing around I found the facial name tag feature to be completely addicting. The computer scans the photos and gathers like faces together and you give that person a name. Very cool!
Earlier this year my daughter’s cat passed away. For Christmas my son wanted to make her a calendar with pictures of her cat. We spent quite a bit of time looking at the various features in Picasa before he decided that the poster feature appealed to him. It was very easy to use. We gathered the photos into a folder and set a few options such as page layout and orientation and presto we had a poster. Here’s the final product ordered in a 36″x 24″ poster print and now hanging happily on the wall.
Tumblr vs. Pinterest
I have to admit that I love Pinterest. While I have a page I really spend most my time searching and browsing, not necessarily pinning on my own. Before getting involved in Tumblr I decided to do a quick Google search to see if it’s worth investing my limited time into Tumblr. Results were mixed. According to this article from PCMag Tumblr is one of the top 10 sites in the US but in an earlier article they stated that Pinterest was more popular. In the end I decided that I can stick with Pinterest for now but it’s good that I have a passing familiarity with Tumblr.
What does the future hold?
In the future I am looking forward to using both Flickr Advanced Search and Google Advanced Search with my students in locating photos to use in our Animoto book trailers. I am also looking forward to using BigHugeLabs for some creative projects of my own.
