Thing 2: Online Communities & PLN

What do I use Twitter for?

For years I’ve had a Twitter account and just never used it. It just seems to complicated. I do my hashtag search but never really seem to know what it was I was looking at.

Hurricane Sandy and Twitter

Dunes, President Avenue, Lavallette, NJ

Then came Hurricane Sandy…. My husband was concerned about his family in Central Jersey and their bungalow in Ocean Beach NJ. I am amazed at the resources he kept coming up with! Photos and videos of the locations we were concerned about from random people. How was he finding all this amazing information? Twitter! I had no idea it could be that useful. He was entering the name of the town “Lavallette” and coming up with post after post about the area and the damage.

While we still don’t know the state of the bungalow we know the roof is still there and soon summer residents will get to go in on buses….Twitter was a useful tool in finding this out.

Twitter in Baby Steps

While I’m not yet ready to post on Twitter I’ve found some people to follow and some hashtags that are of interest to me.

I’ve added Twitter to Flipboard on my iDevices but I can see myself looking for a better aggregator in the future maybe TweetDeck or Netvibes (as mentioned in Thing 3). Off to Thing 3.

By the way, the timer and task list from my last post…epic fail….20 minutes turned into another hour. Alas, I had fun.

Hope you found the family beach bungalow survived? Scary, scary storm. And what a great use of twitter. No need to actually tweet, but consuming info via flipboard or other tools is so efficient. Well, that is if you pay attention to that timer! 🙂
